Sunderland District Scouts Celebrate St George’s Day and Awards at Sunderland Minster
Sunderland District Scouts came together at Sunderland Minster to celebrate St George’s Day and recognise the outstanding achievements of young people and adult volunteers at this district event.
Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, leaders, families and supporters from across the district attended the annual celebration, which honours St George, the Patron Saint of Scouting. The service offered members a chance to reflect on the values of Scouting, including teamwork, respect and service to others.
The event at Sunderland Minster featured a Scouts’ Own, campfire songs and a renewal of Scout promises, with members of all ages taking part. It also highlighted the positive difference Scouting continues to make in local communities, helping young people build confidence, develop life skills and form friendships through adventure and volunteering.
Among the distinguished guests were His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, the Mayor and Mayoress of the City of Sunderland, and the Durham County Scouts Lead Volunteer. Their attendance helped underline the importance of Scouting across the city and the wider community, as they joined in celebrating the achievements of volunteers and young people throughout the district.
A key part of the day was the presentation of awards to young people and adult volunteers who have shown dedication, commitment and achievement over the past year. The awards recognised Chief Scouts’ Awards, long service, leadership, personal development and contributions to district groups and activities. Members of the district team praised the hard work of volunteers who give their time each week to create opportunities for young people, while also congratulating award recipients on their efforts and successes.
The celebration was a memorable occasion for everyone involved and showcased the strength and spirit of Scouting across Sunderland District. With another busy year ahead, members left inspired to continue learning new skills, supporting their communities and enjoying the adventures that Scouting brings.
