A new Scout Group has been established in Sunderland to provide accessible Scouting opportunities for children and young people across the city, particularly those living in inner-city communities where opportunities are limited. Sunderland City Community Scout Group is built on partnership working, flexibility, and a shared commitment to improving young people’s wellbeing and life chances.
“As a Scout leader in another district, I have seen the positive impact Scouting can have on young people’s wellbeing, confidence, and future prospects. When talking to pupils in this area, it became clear that many children had limited access to evening activities and no local Scout Group they could attend. There was real enthusiasm for Scouting, including from young people who had previously been Cubs in their home countries. Setting up a local, accessible group felt like a vital step.”
Mrs Cathy Westgate, Headteacher, Hudson Road Primary School.

Working in partnership with YAV Sunderland, plans were developed to create a community-based Scout Group serving children and young people across inner-city Sunderland, particularly the East End and Hendon. Although the project first began in 2020, it was paused due to Covid and successfully restarted in 2023. With strong support from Durham Scouts, the group was established with volunteers drawn from school staff and youth workers, all supported through appropriate training. The group also benefited from the guidance of the local Lead Volunteer, Carlton, who advised and supported the team every step of the way. The flexible structure allows other schools to run sections as part of the wider community Scout Group. The response from young people has been extremely positive. A thriving Cub Pack is now enjoying a wide range of activities and badges, with opportunities ahead to attend District and County events, including Cub Camps. Work is also underway to develop a sustainable Scout section and, in time, create pathways to Explorers and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
